Pioneer Ladies Civitan Group Birthday Party 7/18/06
|
Many thanks and much appreciation goes out to the Pioneer Ladies Civitan Group. I was invited to attend a Dog-Gone Good Party on behalf of the Humane Society, and that it was. The ladies were extremely generous! By the time the party ended and everything was loaded, the front seat, back seat, and trunk of my car were all full of donations for the Humane Society. Thank you ladies! Your generosity is very much appreciated by the animals and staff at the Humane Society.

Cheryl Beyers - New Shelter Manager
|
Hello. My name is Cheryl Byers. I would take this opportunity to introduce myself as the new Shelter Manager at the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley. It is my pleasure to be affiliated with such a worthy cause. The shelter has been busy over the last month or so. Following are a few of the highlights from success stories, that were attained I might add, while the shelter was in the in the transitional phase between managers. The employees worked above and beyond the call of duty to maintain “business as usual”. To: Ilikai, Kim, Butch, Dennis, Doug, Bill, Robert, Pat, and Barbara; Thank you for your dedication, support, and time you gave to make the transition as smooth as possible. Congratulations for a job well done. Washington Elementary School played a huge role in the fairytale ending for Speedbump aka Hipster. $265.00 was raised which exceeded the $225.00 required. The surgery was successful and Hipster is now safe and sound in his new forever home. Fifty four students from Washington Elementary visited the shelter as volunteers during a field trip and walked every one of our dogs. Washington School also provided lunch for the shelter employees on May 30. The Adopt-A-Thon that was held at K-Mart in conjunction with Pedigree was very successful also. We received $190.00 in donations while there, and adopted four dogs from that location. There were six dogs adopted from the shelter location during the Adopt-A-Thon.
During the month of May we sent 33 dogs to Rescue. Thank goodness! We are extremely proud to report that our dog Sandy the Rat Terrier was adopted by Janice Melnyck who resides in British Columbia. She saw Sandy on our website and from there proceeded to initiate the adoption. Sandy was transported to Yeager Airport in Charleston, WV by Jim Baldinger. She then flew cross county to Seattle, WA. where she was then picked up by her new owner. This was truly a team effort. Looking forward, we will be hosting an Adopt-A-Thon Friday, June 9, 2006 from 6pm to 9pm in front of Sugden’s Book Store on Front Street. We are still accepting volunteers for this event. The more volunteers we have, the more dogs we can take. This event is going to showcase some of our older dogs in an attempt to educate the community on the importance of these dogs deserving forever homes too. On Saturday, June 10, 2006 Butch, our Humane Officer will be representing the shelter at the YMCA Pet Show from 10:00am to 12:00pm. He is taking one dog with him to show while he conducts a Humane Education Session. Our Humane Officer will be at the library in Barlow on June 13, 2006 conducting an informational session discussing the duties of the Humane Officer and the humane treatment of animals. June 17, 2006 we will be participating in the Williamstown Celebration in the Park. This will be an Adopt-A-Thon also. We will be there from 9am to 6pm. Our assigned area is located in the front of the park under the large trees facing Highland Ave. And again, the more volunteers we have the better. We are going to be throwing a kitten / puppy shower at the shelter on June 24, 2006. The concept of this event is that of a baby shower. This will run from 1-3pm. We are requesting that attendees donate kitten and puppy supplies. Refreshments will be served. If you would like to help with a donation to defer the cost of refreshments please contact the shelter. At present, our shelter is full to capacity. We are waiving adoption fees for kittens during the month of June in an attempt to send some of these babies to forever homes. We also have some puppies and adult dogs for which adoption fees are being waived during this time. We have kittens available at We Love Pets located in the Lafayette Shopping Plaza. They so graciously house, care for, and help us find forever homes for these little ones also. In closing, I would like to ask that everyone please spay or neuter your pets, and ask your friends and family to do the same. Together we can control the pet population. Cheryl |

April Newsletter
|
The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley Newsletter April 2005
The Humane Society of the Ohio Valley is making great strides in making our local shelter a healthier, happier temporary home for the animals of Washington County. We are now vaccinating and deworming the animals, regardless of age. The management has talked with several of our local veterinarians and they have agreed to help with many of the questions or concerns regarding our animals. We also are making a great progress with our spaying and neutering program. Its a slow start, but at this time we have had 4 our dogs spayed or neutered with 6 more scheduled in April. By taking one day a time we will eventually be able to say, we have made an impact on the amount of unwanted dogs and cats in our area with the help of some of our local vets.
Rescue groups in Michigan have rescued 50 of our animals since January 1st-2005. We are currently starting to work with The Animal Protection League in Cleveland, Ohio who will take at least 8 of our large breed dogs and 12 pups or kittens. We have a few other rescues through out the eastern United States that help us out whenever they have room, they will take as many as they can place in loving homes. This brings up another major concern that people in our community need to know, those who decide to become pet owner, must have their animals spayed or neutered. There is not enough room at our shelter and other rescue groups to house all of the animals that are no longer wanted and loved. If you are a family who is in need of financial assistance with having your animal spayed or neuter, please apply at the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley at 90 Mt. Tom Rd. Marietta, Ohio 45750.
Our 2nd annual fur ball was a HUGE success, raising $7100.00 for the shelter. Thank you to all who donated their time and merchandise, and we hope to see you next year.
More good news, Dallas and Jeanne Elswick of the Marietta Bridge Company, has set up an account and are purchasing the material that is needed for the installation of the electrical work that will be installed by the Electrician Union Local 972, with no cost to the shelter. Thank you Marietta Bridge Company, Apex Feed and Supply, and Electrician Local 972.
We are still in need of material and installation of concrete board, insulation and other material that is needed to make the rooms complete. If you or your company would like to help the shelter with any of the finishing material or labor, please contact Shelly Castin at the shelter. 740-373-5959.
Up coming events: March 22-05 Putnam School book fair and family night 4:00 to 7:00 April 23-05 Ohio River Museum-Earth Day Celebration 12:00 to 3:00 May 20th & 21st -05 Yard Sale @ VFW on Pike Street May 22nd-05 Fish Fry @Buckeye Park in Marietta Hosted by Marietta Bridge Company 12:00 to 4:00. Spay and neuter clinic will be held in November-2005 this year, dates & location to be announced later. We also will be attending the Farmers market on a bi-weekly basis, more often, if we can get some volunteers to help with the animals. Kroger days will also be scheduled thought out the spring and summer months; we invite you to do some shopping at both locations and visit the animals.
The Humane Society is looking for volunteers to help with fund raisers for all of the events scheduled, if you would like to help in anyway, please stop at the shelter or by calling 740-373-5959

Thank You to the Michigan and Ohio Shelters for their help
|
Currently the Michigan Humane Society-Rochester Hills Shelter and the Cleveland Animal Protective League are taking dogs from us and finding them permanent, loving homes. It is great to receive help from two large and successful shelters.
